CUSTOMER UPDATE                19 September 2005

Working towards key milestones

Work is well underway to ensure a successful integration of our two businesses, which will come together under the one brand name in February 2006.  We continue our regular customer updates with a look at the progress made on shaping our combined organisation.

A new global organisation
One of the global priorities in planning the integration of our two companies has been setting the overall organisational structure.  A large part of this structure has now been established by Maersk’s CEOs in Copenhagen, with some activities still being reviewed to determine the most effective approach.

Regional focus
The plan is to continue decentralising functions to seventeen distinctive regional areas, a process that has been on-going in Maersk for the last two years.  Here, our Oceania area encompasses Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Key management appointments
The development of the management structure and selection of the senior management team has been a complex and thorough process. The key global management positions are being finalised and the first of these have now been announced.

Soren Houman has been re-appointed as Oceania Area Manager and will have overall responsibility for leading the new Oceania team. Further announcements will follow shortly on key positions in Oceania.

People key to successful integration
Maersk recognises that  the key to successfully bringing our two companies together is our people. At both the global and regional levels, the plan is to build a truly multinational company, bringing together the collective talents and expertise of people all over the world from both companies.  We believe this will create new opportunities and strengthen our combined organisation.

Oceania Integration
In our Oceania area, Australian and New Zealand colleagues from both companies have been participating in workgroups, contributing to plans for the integration of the various functional areas.  These groups are now well into the detailed planning stages of the integration.

Tony Gibson, P&O Nedlloyd’s Country Manager for New Zealand said “While our two companies have been competitors, I am encouraged by the willingness and dedication of our colleagues from both companies to work together, with open communication and sharing of objectives to make this a success.
“There is a lot in common in the way we approach our business and a great deal of respect by each company for the other.”

Flemming Gamst, Maersk Oceania Area Sales Manager acknowledged the scale of the task in bringing the two companies together.
“However, our teams have quickly come to understand each other and are totally focused on the common goal of building our new organisation.
“I am encouraged by the progress they have made, as we work on bringing together the best attributes of culture and values from both companies.”

Oceania Sales integration
We are sorry to farewell Damian Milicich, Maersk National Sales Manager in New Zealand.  Damian’s departure was not directly related to the acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd and we thank him for his contribution as Workgroup Owner for the sales integration team.

Tony Mildon, P&O Nedlloyd’s National Customer Manager will take up this responsibility as Workgroup Owner and will help drive the sales integration forward.  Tony will also continue with his day-to-day responsibilities.

Members of the team are:
Flemming Gamst – Sponsor (Maersk Oceania Area Sales Manager)
Tony Mildon – Owner (P&O Nedlloyd National Customer Manager, NZ)
Ross Hardy (Maersk National Sales Manager, Australia)
Gordon Paine (P&O Nedlloyd Sales and Marketing Manager, NZ)
Scot Taylor (P&O Nedlloyd Sales and Marketing Manager, Australia)

As part of the sales integration, we held the first combined sales meeting in New Zealand last week.  This focussed on putting the framework in place for the way we will be working together with our customers, leading up to the full integration of both companies.

The first Australian combined sales meeting will be held this week, with the same agenda.

Business as usual
While we are working towards integration of our companies by February, until then it is “business as usual”.  In this interim period, both P&O Nedlloyd and Maersk Sealand are continuing to operate as separate lines and customers should continue to deal with each line as usual.

If you have any questions about shipping during this period or the integration of our companies, please ask your Maersk or P&O Nedlloyd representative.
